As part of the preparations for Yom HaZikaron, Orit Mark spoke with students at OTS’s Neveh Shmuel Yeshiva High School, in Memory of Samuel Pinchas Ehrman.

Orit is the daughter of Rabbi Michael (Miki) Mark HY”D, an alumnus of Neveh Shmuel’s very first class and an extraordinary man of Torah, kindness and action. Rabbi Mark was murdered seven years ago in a shooting attack near Otniel, of which he was one of the founders.

In a fascinating and moving conversation, Orit spoke about her father’s unique character, about dealing with his absence in the wake of the murder, and the complex process the family went through – including her mother’s rehabilitation process from the severe injuries she sustained in the attack. Orit shared with the family’s unimaginable pain when her older brother Shlomi fell in the course of duty in the Prime Minister’s Office two and a half years after their father’s murder – a pain that Orit and the family have managed to channel into a life of doing good and spreading light.

Orit said that in her life she tries, despite everything, to do good, and to only see only good in the people she meets. She quoted a sentence that her mother often repeats: “The majority is good, and the majority rules!”

Orit’s inspiring story and the light radiating from her face were inspirational for the yeshiva students and staff and an important lesson to them all in dealing with challenges. The closing of Orit’s circle in the place where her father studied nearly 40 years ago was also especially meaningful for everyone there.

May Rabbi Mark’s memory be a blessing.
