Tell us about the position you’re in:
The community is 150 years old and gathers all Jews in Bern and nearby. We are working on establishing structures that can be in place for generations to come. Such as a functioning conversion program, ties with other communities in and around Switzerland and healthy and stable community traditions. Once in a while we remember that our most important task is to make people feel they are cared for, spiritually as well as physically.

What did you receive from the Straus-Amiel Educational Emissary Training Progam and the Claudia Cohen Women Educator Institute?
We received relationships that have been crucial to our work. The knowledge that Amiel is there to support us or for advice, gives us a needed sense of security. Questions and challenges involving giurim could not have been solved without the help of Amiel and Rabbi Birnbaum. The Machzor for Rosh Hashana during Corona was the easiest to understand Teshuva regarding tfilot on Rosh Hashana this year.

What message would you like to impart regarding shlichut?
Shlichut is crucial to developing a healthy and conscious Jewish identity that incorporates the needs and importance of Jewish communities around the world. It can open your eyes to vital aspects of Judaism that is difficult to see anywhere else. Shlichut should be done for your own Jewishness, but it can impact other Jews in ways you can only dream of. Come with an open mind, ready to work all day and every day, and experience yourself develop as a Jew in the process.
